Refurbishment of H and Kenny wings of this historic building (number three on National Heritage Register) included student apartments, lecture theatre, administration offices and a small commercial kitchen.
The project was programmed into three stages and was the subject of Heritage Victoria and City of Melbourne Town Planning and Building approvals. Extensive research was carried into Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney’s original design so that the resulting scheme was complementary.
As well as responding to the significance of components as described in the Conservation Management Plan, the practice has applied the Griffin’s spirit of openness and inclusion along with the techniques of enlargement and telescoping to the design of new elements. The practice believes that it has responded to the Griffins’ original design intentions in taking this path.
